:: Ancestral Sea ::

A few days ago found me wandering down the Quebradas Byway, a long, solitary dirt road journey through the northern fringe of the Chihuahuan Desert east of Socorro, New Mexico.  Around midday I was perched high on a steep slope covered with loose scree, closely examining the rocks as I waited for a mold to cure on a nearby boulder.  I was looking for fossils: this outcrop of rock was over 300 million years old.  Far back in time during that remote era, west was north and the land I was standing on was under an ancestral sea that straddled the equator.  Brachiopods, crinoids, bryozoans and myriad other strangely-named sea creatures flourished in the warm, shallow waters.  It was, quite literally, a different planet with our Four Corners region comprised of a series of arid peninsulas and islands off the northwest coast of the supercontinent Pangaea.

These rough brown rocks were all that remained of that ancient world, and they were full of tiny fossils.  I found several hand-sized chunks that were almost solid fossils as well as some smaller ones...and a perfect brachiopod imprint in a boulder, which was the source of the mold.  That mold was used for the left hand earring you see here, with a portion of the striated brachiopod visible at the bottom: in the closeup view (second photo) I've placed it next to a similar fossil for comparison.  The right hand earring was molded from the very rock you see it on here in the fifth photo, which is full of crinoid fragments and a myriad other tiny remnants of deep time.

These two pendants were made from fine silver precious metal clay, or PMC.  They were hand formed and fired in a kiln, after which they were given a warm, rusty patina and hand finished.  Two small crinoid segments from the same time period are on the ear wires, wrapped securely in place.  The wires themselves were hammered on desert rock and similarly finished.

Truly these are talismans of deep time...for a greater perspective of life on Earth...

SIZE:  3" x 3/4".

CARE:  Rinse in water to clean; soap is fine.  The patina will deepen with time.  Use a silver polishing cloth for a brighter shine or buff gently with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad to restore the matte surface.
