When I draw or paint, I have always tried to make the image hold together so it reads well from a distance, and then as you move in it keeps on doing that no matter how closely you look.  As I've shifted my primary focus to adornments the same idea carries through, and this one has some extremely fine detail that from an average distance gives more of an impression of texture than objects, especially in the beaded embroidery on the fabric and buffalo hide.  But then as you move in and really look you see more and more.  The overall integrity of the piece holds together but unfolds, fractal-like, into layers of pattern and detail.

That little bead, made from saginite in agate, is a good example of richness in detail.  Have a look at the closeup shot of it...the other side is fascinating as well and you can turn the bead around on its setting if you prefer it to face out.  The entire piece is like that, full of texture and life.  I spent over two days on it, going very slowly, making sure everything worked, and taking apart a lot of things that didn't.

It actually began with the leather strip, which is buffalo hide.  I've had a few scraps of this hide for many years and I can't even remember where I got it.  It is incredibly thick and nappy on the underside; my hat's off to the women who prepared and tanned the tough, heavy hides of these primordial beasts in the old days using primitive tools.  I thinned down this piece by half and then carefully stained and distressed it for an antique appearance.  Beads were stitched on, a line of antique brass beads from Orissa, accented with tiny rice pearls along the edges.  A natural linen wrap holds it in place.

A tattered length of re-purposed linen-ramie blend fabric is next to it.  This, too, was stained and distressed, wrapped with hammered sterling silver wire and beaded with miniscule antique French metal beads and seed pearls.  The curious object on the other side of the buffalo hide is fire-scarred, or heat-textured, sterling silver.  I was working it with the torch for another piece but when it came off the fire brick I was so taken with the texture that I decided to keep it just as it was.  And next to that is the saginite-in-agate bead, a rare combination, which is by Gary B. Wilson.  All of the attachments are hammered and oxidized sterling silver, and the ring that these elements hang from is heavy fused fine silver, hammered on desert rock.

Two additional amulets were added, a fossil ivory tooth, either walrus or seal, from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, and a ring I made from copper metal clay which was molded from Mesa Verde, Colorado, sagebrush.  The cord is sterling silver mesh, very fine and drapey...I love the way this feels in the hand.  It is commercially made, but I gave it a light golden patina, and it was joined with a wrap, stitched through the ends, of hammered sterling wire.

SIZE:  The pendant assemblage measures 7", or 18cm, in length.  The necklace with pendant measures 25", or 62.5cm, from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:  To clean, rinse briefly in cool water and gently blot dry, or simply wipe very gently with a soft, damp cloth.   The silver can be brightened with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad, for matte, or a silver polishing cloth, for a brighter shine.
