:: Beauty Through Struggle ::

The process of primitive silverwork is a journey with many unexpected twists and turns.  I never know where a particular design will lead or if it will even work until the last stages of creation.  This little ring presented some unexpected challenges during the course of its making, but they resulted in some spectacular surface textures that I could never have anticipated.  Hence the name.

The stone is a fossil ammonite negative cabochon by Gary Wilson, who lives in Tucson and has the desert in his soul.  Rather than being the fossil itself, this is the perfect imprint left behind in the matrix rock that surrounded the fossil shell.   A uniform deep bronze in color, it is exquisite and beautifully structured.

I set the stone in a deep bezel on a thick platform of 16 gauge sterling silver, to which an adjustable sterling band was attached.  The band is also 16 gauge and was heavily heat textured.  Because this is a much smaller ring than my usual dinner-plate-sized monsters, the band is narrower, but it is still slightly tapered for comfort.  The silver bears the scratches, dents, scars and solder overruns telling the story of its making, and I have left every one intact because I love the texture.  The patina is deep but rather colorful and the metal has a matte sheen, and as you wear it the patina will darken in the crevices while the high spots will acquire a brighter polish.  This is your personal addition to the evolution of the ring.

Suitable as a pinky ring, or a ring for smaller sized fingers, this is also an extremely durable ring that can withstand daily wear.

Rugged and elemental, like desert stone and deep time...

SIZE:  Because the band is not perfectly round, it is very hard to gauge the exact size range of this ring.  My best estimate is that it will adjust to around a ring size 6-7 with some wiggle room in either direction.  The ammonite in its bezel measures 7/8" by just over 1/2".

CARE: Wash and wear as desired. Do not scrub the ring or you will damage the patina...let it become richer with time and wear. When adjusting the shank to fit, only bend it slowly and gently.

PRESENTATION:  This ring will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
