Pale stoneflowers...evidence of lost seas set in primitive silverwork to adorn your ears

Every once in a while something emerges from the studio that is just spot on, a perfect resonance with desert light and form.  This pair of earrings is among them.  Their wafer-thin translucent stones admit the light through cutout silver bezels which are finished in a soft golden patina.  With these Desert Primitive pieces I seek to create talismans that appear to have grown from the stone and sand of the desert floor, as with these.

The stones are fossil coral cabochons by Tuscon lapidarist Gary Wilson, who has been my first choice for one-of-a-kind cabochons and pendants for many years.  The desert is most characterized by the absence of water and yet nowhere is the evidence of its presence more visible.  Fossils of ancient life from long-vanished seas are even more evocative. These cabs are slightly domed and highly polished on the fronts, and matte on the back.  Since they were so delicately translucent I cut out the backs of their bezels to allow the light to shine through.  The reverse sides of the earrings are just as beautiful as the front in my eyes, and I was hard-put to decide which way to bend the ear wires when the time came.

The silver settings are as delicate as the stones and even though these are large earrings they are virtually weightless.  Primitive bezels frame the stones with long hammered wires for suspension.  The silver was hammered on desert rock, roughly finished, and given a pale gold patina which I have sealed with Renaissance Wax, a preservative wax that is used by museums as well as jewelers.  It will help to prevent this delicate gold from darkening over time.

SIZE:  Just over 2 3/4" long by 1 1/4" wide.

CARE:   To protect the patina, rinse only in cool water without soap to clean.  Avoid any type of abrasive with the silver.

PRESENTATION:  These earrings will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
