:: Holding the Light ::

This tiny, all handmade pouch is made from lightly distressed deerhide that is butter-soft but extremely tough. The hand-cut fringe is decorated with dozens of beads and amulets, many of which are antique or even ancient. Its plied strap is adjustable thanks to an antique glass slider bead at the top. The small pouch is U-shaped and stitched with hide lacings, and it has a separate drawstring ornamented with stacked discs of Pre-Columbian shell.

You can use this pouch to carry a small stone, fetish or object, stuff it with fragrant herbs such as sage or cedar, or simply wear it as it is (something to keep in it might come along later). I always make my pouches completely by hand without a plan: a sense of one will come, and I will gather materials and allow it to evolve as it will. Because of this they are always very different, and this one wanted beads...a lot of beads, all in white.  Nearly every strand of fringe is decorated. Tribal people have used beads as offerings to the sacred items contained in a pouch, or the spirit that the item honors, or even the item itself.

This pouch is dressed all in white, with a few milky blue antique trade glass beads from Africa added in.  There is plenty of shell, including cowrie, Pre-Columbian shell discs from Colombia, and shell from Africa.  Several tiny quartz crystals are tied in, as well as antique glass trade beads from Africa.  There are many bone beads, including fish bone and rattlesnake bone, as well as clay, Holy Basil wood prayer beads from India, and ancient agate tubes from Africa.  There are also several very old beads that were given to me that look like dentalium shell but may be glass reproductions, showing heavy wear.

I love this little piece...it feels alive and is very sweet. It would also make a great display piece, kept on an altar, table or hung on the wall.

SIZE: The pouch can hold an object 1 1/2" x 1 1/8", or 35mm x 25mm in size. The pouch with fringe measures approximately 5" x 3", or 14cm x 7.5cm. The adjustable straps have a maximum length of 14 1/2", or 37cm, and can be made shorter from there.

CARE: This pouch is very sturdy but some of the ancient beads and elements are more fragile; please take care not to knock it too hard and otherwise it should be fine. Immersion is not recommended for the same reason.

PACKAGING: Holding the Light will arrive beautifully giftwrapped in Earth friendly packaging.
