An unorthodox pendant to say the least, this is an old wooden slingshot from Guatemala.  I discovered it several years ago and instantly resolved to use it as a pendant.  In the meantime it has been a much admired and wondered-at artifact residing in my studio.  I can't tell you the exact age of this piece--I'm reluctant to use the vague "Vintage/Antique" description--but while it does look antique it may be less than one hundred years old.  At any rate, this is an authentic piece that bears the polish that only use can bestow.  It was probably used to hunt small birds in the rainforest for food, plumage or both.  Xs are carved down one side of the handle while simple slashes are carved down the other.  This one has stories to tell, I'm sure.

Recently I found some very nice iridescent bronze freshwater pearls that went perfectly with the slingshot, just the right size and colors.  They are just slightly off-round and have oxidized brass seed beads from India between them, giving them space to breathe.  Higher up on the strand is another small treasure, an ancient Mayan stone bead.  This dark green bead is Post-Classic Mayan and is approximately 700-1100 years old.  It is also from Guatemala, and seemed a fitting companion for the slingshot.  With it is a small disc of fossil walrus ivory from the Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska...a long way from Guatemala.

African bone, brass discs, and vintage brass beads from Orissa, India also accent the strand.

It is truly a remarkable piece, and lightweight despite the size.  A wonderful talisman with a rich history.  Yet, pure Desert Primitive at its heart.

SIZE:  The necklace measures 23 1/2" from the back of your neck to the bottom of the slingshot when worn.  The slingshot itself is 5" long.

CARE:  Do not immerse to clean as water may damage the wooden slingshot.  Instead, clean with a soft, damp cloth.
