Like an opening into another world, this ring of creamy white shell has a strongly talismanic feel.  It is an antique "Yua", a form of shell currency from Papua New Guinea similar to the Kwalia I often use, but these discs are more solid, dimensional rings cut with bamboo from clamshells.  This is a small one; some of the larger ones are well in excess of 12" diameter and are cut from giant clams!  The simplicity of form combined with the smooth, timeworn texture of the translucent shell is truly beautiful, and like many of my pendants it is very pleasing to hold in your hand.

The Yua hangs from an extra long strand of beads.  I'm very attracted to the combination of a long tunic with extra long necklaces, and I often pair it with jeans or leggings in my everyday wear.  This strand is made up of seed pearls alternating with brass beads from India, with miniscule antique steel cut beads from France in between.  The accent beads are special ones: the five small, white tube beads are from the ancient Indus Valley civilization and date to 4,000-5,000 BCE!  The little agate beads were made in India and traded to Africa, and are also old, maybe several hundred years or more.  The largest white tube is conch shell, probably vintage Naga (I haven't verified this with the dealer yet).  There are also fossil ivory and bone mala beads.

Above the juncture is a stack of raw quartz, a fossil ivory fragment from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, and a bone mala bead, while a lark's head knot of antique steel cut beads secures the Yua.  These antique metal beads came straight off the original hank and have never been used.  I used professional grade beading wire with brass crimp beads to string the piece.

This necklace will layer beautifully with the Vintage Ethnographic Tany Shell Pendant necklace!

SIZE:  The necklace measures 22 3/4", or 58.4 cm, from the back of your neck to the bottom of the pendant when worn.  The Yua is 1 7/8" or 47mm wide.

CARE:   The entire necklace can be rinsed in cool water to clean.  Take care with pearls as exposure to various body care products can damage their shine-but natural skin oils will enhance their glow.  Avoid harsh detergents when washing your necklace.

PRESENTATION:  This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
