An embodiment of wildness, of desert landscapes and ceremonies held on the earth, under the open sky...this small ritual bundle is a spirit talisman of the drylands.  Keep it on an altar, table or shelf as a totem of the austere, uncompromising, enduring beauty of the land.  You may also hold it in the hand for contemplation and connection with the earth, for grounding and for strength.

Its origins lie in the artifact bundles of the Anasazi.  I have seen them, wrapped with yucca cordage and ornamented with feathers and beads, some painted, all mysterious.  The foundation is made with the leg bone of a deer, a sinuous weathered root found far out in the dunes of White Sands, and a graceful fragment of juniper wood, weathered by time and the harsh climate of the high desert.  These are bundled together with strands of narrowleaf yucca fibers that I prepared myself, and a chunk of raw mammoth (possibly mastodon) ivory, chosen for its deeply ancient energy.

Wrappings of various natural fibers bind the elements together.  Most are yucca cordage which I made by hand as the Anasazi did, using techniques taught to me by Mary Weahkee of Santa Clara Pueblo.  The yucca was gathered from my own land.  Other cordage includes thick ahimsa silk, which looks like brown dreadlocks, and a bit of hemp fiber.

Numerous talismans are carefully arranged around the bundle, including four kiln-fired metal clay elements.  One is copper, a ring that was impressed in raw form on a fossil fish vertebra...an oblique reference to water, so precious in the desert.  The other three are silver.  One is a simple, slender twig.  Another is a crushed ring which was directly impressed on a fragment of soaptree yucca bark from White Sands.  The other is a thick oval that was directly impressed as raw clay into the stone of Hungo Pavi ruins at Chaco Canyon.  These small objects carry the echo of those far-flung sites.

A translucent rectangle of desert chalcedony is opposite these; I found this far out in the Mojave desert of California, miles from a paved road.  Its beautiful pitted surface is naturally stained a delicate terra cotta.  Pre-Columbian shell beads from Colombia bring in ancestral energy, as do the ancient and primitive quartz discs, excavated in the sub-Saharan region.  These last can be gently adjusted on the underside of the bundle to enable it to sit at the angle you prefer, although technically there is no "underside" to it, and all sides and views are beautiful.

A unique offering...bearing the essence of an extraordinary desert places and ancient energies.

SIZE: The bundle measures 7 1/4" or 18.3cm from one end of the bone to the other; the yucca fibers extend about an inch beyond these.  At its widest, it is about 2 1/2" or 63cm across.

CARE:  Because of the organic and ancient elements, handle this bundle with care.  Keep it out of the reach of pets.

PRESENTATION:  I will giftwrap this bundle for you and bless it in a small ceremony, as with all of my talismans. See the shop policies below for details.
