:: White Bajada ::

When I was exploring the empty spaces of the Mojave Desert last month, I discovered a vast valley that was almost perfectly white.  The bajada was made up of white quartz granite that had washed down from a nearby range and it was entrancing in its stillness and ethereal beauty.  White places in the desert feel like pure spirit to me.  This necklace was inspired by that place.

The focal bead is antique Naga shell.  I gravitated toward this one as I often do--because of its imperfections.  Deep fissures mark the sides and enhance its beauty; the bead was made from the spiraling core of a conch shell and you can see subtle indications of its form.

A handwoven cord was firmly anchored inside the Naga bead and was woven upward from there.  The beads are either strung on the cord or woven directly into it, and there are many beautiful ancient and antique ones here.  They include ancient quartz beads from central Asia, Pre-Columbian shell from South America, antique shell currency from New Guinea, African Yoruba brass, Mali clay, metal beads and ostrich eggshell.  Creating pieces with these extraordinary old beads is a moving experience, and I often wonder who wore them so long ago, and what their lives were like.

Beautiful, organic contemporary beads blend perfectly with these, and include handmade clay beads by Georgia Neumann of Taos, New Mexico, bronze keshi pearls, naturally-shed antler, Naga shell, etched brass, a bone mala bead, a stoneware disc, and glass seed beads.  An antique shell currency serves as a toggle clasp.

Dramatic but not overly-so, this is a very comfortable necklace to wear and I'm sure it will become a perennial favorite.  It has a soft, earthy feminine energy that is just warm and lovely.

SIZE:  The shell focal bead measures 2 1/2" x 5/8", or 63 mm x 15 mm .  The necklace with pendant measures 20" or 51 cm from the back of your neck to the end of the pendant when worn.

CARE:   While this is a very securely made piece, take care with these ancient and antique beads.  Some of them are fragile and have traveled a very long way to become part of this new piece, and should be handled with respect and care.

PRESENTATION: White Bajada will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See the shop policies below for details.
