Evoking a distant time and place, this talisman bundle is a layered story of desert wanderings.

I began with memories of prehistoric artifacts seen at beloved museums across the Southwest:  mysterious remnants of raveled cordage, hide, and beads: echoes of objects, blurred by time.  A long, thin spine of petrified wood was chosen for the core, found in a remote location in northwest New Mexico.  This was carefully wrapped in strips of juniper bark and tied.  Over this I wound a broad strip of vintage Japanese silk, softened by time.  Before it was wrapped and sewn into place, a small pocket was stitched into one end, and into it I placed red sand from the Utah canyon country, golden tears of sacred copal resin, and a pinch of yellow corn pollen from Jemez Pueblo for blessing.

An obsidian needle from northeast California was added, and a fragment of raw mammoth (possibly mastodon) ivory from Siberia, along with a handmade bronze disc molded from a granite wall at Joshua Tree, CA...all tied with distressed fabric, linen thread, yucca fiber and cordage, vintage thread, and vintage golden embroidery thread from Japan.  Tiny beads were added in: ancient shell and clay, calcified ancient coral, myrrh tears, clay from Mali.  All bundled tightly together into a concentrated bundle of primal earth energy.  It is meant to be without a front, to be seen from all sides.

The chain and bail are hammered and oxidized bronze, its warm coppery glow softened by hand sanding.  Many links have beads: ancient Bactrian glass over 2000 years old, Pre-Columbian clay, ancient calcified coral and shell, myrrh, Baltic black and green amber.

It is something from the earth, a piece you can hold onto and connect to its gentle, grounding energy, a talisman that is a reminder of landscape, and human memory, and long walkabouts in the drylands...

SIZE:  The necklace measures 22" from the back of your neck to the bottom of the amulet, when worn.  The amulet without its bronze bail is 4" long.

CARE:   Take care with this amulet with its petrified wood, ancient beads and glass and clay...they have traveled a long way through time.  Don't handle the piece roughly.  To clean, do not immerse in water; wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth.  The bronze elements can be burnished with a polishing cloth if desired.

PRESENTATION:  This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped.  See my shop policies below for details.
