Every so often I am lucky enough to bring something directly through from the desert Dreamtime.  These objects have an ephemeral nature, so fragile that carrying them across the border from there to here is a slow and delicate undertaking.  I must pay very close attention for what I am carrying may be easily lost along the way, unraveling back into the dreaming ground.

This small vessel appears to be for ritual purposes, perhaps a ceremony of transformation; I was not told what it is for, it just appeared one morning.  It is made from a triangle of pale deer hide, stitched up the sides with hemp, the upper corners gently opened like petals.  The three-sided form is unusual and I am thinking it is a women's vessel, for transformational purposes because it is also ornamented with the vertebrae of rattlesnakes and fragments of rattlesnake skin.  They are very fond of snakes in the place where this came from.

It has a wildness about it, with its undulating lines and bundles of offerings attached to each mottled side.  These bundles are both invocations of qualities and an offering to the spirit and intention of the vessel, and the spirit of the wise and ever-renewing serpent power.  Several strands of fine linen are knotted with matte glass beads which appear brown at first glance but then reveal themselves to be subtly colored; there are also bone-white beads.  A single tooth is with each of these, the polished ancient teeth of walrus or seal.  Fine ribbons of hand dyed silk trail off like lines of energy.  Beads in dusky earthen hues are stitched in progression up each corner.

I have photographed it with a fill of Mojave desert gravel gathered from a remote wash, but you can fill it with whatever pleases you...stones, feathers, bones...fetishes, offerings.  Resin incense.  Scraps of paper written with intentions or prayers.  Earth, sand, more gravel.  This is actually similar to a large three lobed vessel I keep on my studio altar that I call my Earth Pot, which is filled with pinches of earth, sand, plants, and stones from every desert place I've been.  You can use this vessel in a like manner if you wish.
