I recently made a day trip down to the Quebradas Byway area east of Socorro.  There is a ridge there with layers of rock so laden with tiny fossils that they, alone, seem to make up the stone.  They are the remnants of a primordial sea which covered our desert lands over 300 million years ago, when New Mexico was part of the west coast of Pangaea and straddled the equator.  These warm, shallow waters held an abundance of life including brachiopods, crinoids and other small marine creatures.

On the ridge I carefully picked my way up a steep, scree-laden slope in search of these fossils and found a boulder bearing a beautiful impression of a brachiopod shell.  I made a mold of it and the silver pendant on this necklace came from that mold.  The pendant was formed from fine silver precious metal clay, fired in the kiln, lightly oxidized and hand finished.  Above this I created a stack of elements including African bone, polished petrified wood (another Southwestern fossil from Arizona's Chinle Formation) and a caramel chert nugget bead by Gary B. Wilson.  At the top of the cairn is a fused fine silver ring that I hammered on desert rock and hand finished.

The beaded strand complements the earthen, high key neutrals of the pendant and it is a combination of cream-colored seed pearls, Czech glass, brass and silver.   The larger brass beads are vintage tribal beads from Orissa, India, and the silver nuggets are Thai Hill Tribe silver.  I also added a small fused fine silver bead in of my own making.

A beautiful, simple, but sturdy piece that will let you carry the desert with you anywhere...

CARE:  Rinse in cool water to clean.  A silver polishing cloth can be used to brighten the silver on the pendant and the strand of beads.

SIZE:  20 3/4" long from the back of your neck to the end of the cairn pendant, when worn.  The cairn pendant is 5 3/4" long.
