:: White Sage Pouch ::

I’ve been patiently working on this pouch off and on for over a week and many hours have gone into it. It’s a midsize pouch about the size of your hand with beaded fringe, but what makes it truly special is the fine bead work decorating the edges and tabs at the ends of the drawstrings.

Since it was created to hold herbs the smooth side of the leather faces inward so bits of dried leaves don’t get caught in the nap of the suede. The soft suede faces outward, with its golden tan color providing a rich background for the delicate greys, aquas and pale greens of the beads. The hand laced rectangular bag is secured with a double drawstring that can also be used to hang the pouch or even wear it on a belt.

The three hanging panels at the bottom of the bag and the opening at top are edged with tiny aqua glass seed beads. Not only are these beautiful but the edging reinforces the leather and extends the life of the bag. My favorite detail is the tabs on the end of each drawstring. These have been edged with larger sage green beads, with lane stitched beadwork on the ends (see detail photo). Beadwork takes many hours but I love the way these look and feel.

On the front of the pouch is a handmade Pueblo style star pendant created from found stone by Pete Sohappy, who lives over in Galisteo, New Mexico. The color of the stone almost exactly matches the hue of the white sage!

And, as I often do, each strand of fringe holds at least one bead. There are many vintage tin cone tinklers here, as well as several aqua-tinted clay beads by elderly clay artist Georgia Neumann, who creates her whimsical elements up in Taos, NM. In addition there are excavated white glass beads from Africa, antique Venetian glass gooseberry beads, bone mala beads from Asia, clay, and glimmering glass seed beads.

The sage inside the pouch was sustainably harvested in the California desert. White sage, with its characteristic pungent aroma, is considered by many to be the most powerfully purifying of all the sage varieties. I feel that keeping the energy of your home clear is extremely important; your home should be your sanctuary and should feel good and be an energetically healthy space for you. I am teaching a workshop on Home as Sacred Space early next year, and will be talking about smudging as a part of that.

By the way, if you have never smudged with herbs before, it’s easy. You will need a medium to small fireproof bowl or shell—I use a small pottery bowl from Taos Pueblo. Put a small amount of leaves into the bowl and ignite. Allow it to burn only enough to ignite the leaves somewhat and then blow it out before the flames become large. (If you’re new at this you may want to do it over a sink in case ash flies out of the bowl.) Use your hand or a feather to waft the smoke around your space. Open a window or a door a bit to let the smoke out. A little will go a long way. Do this with gratitude and the intention that the energy in your space become CLEAR. When you are finished, use something—a stick, bone or stone—to crush out the burning leaves. White sage will keep burning if you do not do this, so use caution.

SIZE:  The leather color will fade in strong light; display away from direct sun. The holding part of the pouch measures 4 1/2” x 6 3/4”. With fringe the pouch is 11” long.

CARE: Spot clean only with a designated leather cleaner created for suede.
