I created the pendant for this primitive torc back in June of 2012.  It was a hot summer day, not unlike this one, and even though I don't do well in heat I felt compelled to pack up some metal clay and head out to the Ojito Wildnerness.  Ojito is near San Ysidro and Jemez Pueblo, a high desert landscape on the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau full of mesas, hoodoos and many surprises.  I climbed to the top of a small mesa where years before my family and I had found a dinosaur tooth and other fossils.  The heat was bad and the gnats were worse.  Up on top there was some air, and I walked around for a while exploring.  After a while I got out the bronze clay and started making some very primitive impressions of the sandstone mesa surface.  The sun and dry air leached the moisture from the clay almost instantly, forcing me to work fast and loose, not thinking, just doing.

Once fired to bronze at home I gave this large pendant a minimal patina and smoothed off the rough edges.  It is such a perfect embodiment of that wild place and the hot desert sun that I've kept it for a long time.

The process of making the torc necklace from which it is suspended was done in a similar stream of consciousness.  Lengths of sterling silver wire were hammered on my desert rock anvil, which was found less than a mile away from the mesa.  These were wrapped together to form a torc in three articulated parts that hinge together and close with a hook.  The torc was formed on the mannequin to conform to the body's natural curves; when you receive it, you can further shape it to fit your body exactly.  One side has finer wires threaded with tiny seed beads.  All of the silver was carefully sanded smooth so even though the piece looks rough, it is not.  People have commented on how surprisingly lightweight and comfortable my wire torc pieces are.

This is a very contemporary piece, a powerful, raw statement of desert rock, heat and light.  It is connection to the landscape and to the energy of the place, something that appears to have emerged from the landscape by a natural process rather than an artificial one.  A June day high on a mesa top, somewhere in the desert...

SIZE:  The torc measures approximately 20" all the way around.  The bronze pendant measures 3 3/4" x 1 1/8".

CARE:  Wash in water with soap as desired.  The necklace can be polished with a jeweler's polishing cloth to brighten the finish, buffed with a dry kitchen scrubbing pad for a matte finish (as seen here), or simply allowed to darken in patina naturally.

PRESENTATION: This necklace will come to you beautifully giftwrapped in a large hand decorated gift box.  See the shop policies below for details.
