Recently we were given the gift of a couple of days of soft, gentle, steady rain. This is a rarity in the high desert, where rain usually comes in brief, intense showers. The landscape was transformed into a misty, ephemeral world of cool, delicate hues. The antique glass focal bead that anchors this necklace is just the color of that life-giving water, and the beads accompanying it evoke the rain-soaked landscape.

This bead is wonderfully soft and worn, pitted from years of wear. I don’t know its origin, but my guess is Africa or possibly Asia. I choose my beads not only for appearance, but for texture, and this one has a silky texture that feels so soothing in the hand. It hangs on a loop of antique metal steel cut beads and tiny faceted bronze glass beads. Above it is a stacked layer of grey glass, a bronze disc that was impressed with a fossil brachiopod, and an bead made from ancient ivory in St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. A sterling wrap is above these.

I took great care with the progression of the beads on the strand. Working from a base sequence of baroque pearls alternating with glass seed beads, I added in beads of aquamarine, labradorite, raw pyrite, vintage Orissa brass, Yoruba granulated brass, and small brass discs…subtle and varied and quite lovely. For some reason the delicate aqua tint of the focal bead and the aquamarine washed out in the warm desert light when this was photographed, but the hues are distinctly pale aqua. The endless strand was strung on fine professional grade beading wire, and finished with crimp beads.

This is a treasure that you will truly love, and, I think, wear often.
