:: Ocotillo ::

This pendant was created from a mold I made near the spectacular Kofa Mountains of western Arizona a couple of winters ago. The texture came from an ocotillo, a strange whiplike desert plant with many thorned branches spreading from a single base; you can see several if you enlarge the panorama that I took at the time. The branches have a beautiful undulating textural pattern nearer the base and it was from one of these that I took the mold. To me the ocotillos have a markedly different presence than the chollas and cresote that surround them. They are the embodiment of the emptiest parts of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, enduring drought and wind in silence, only to burst forth with tiny green leaves all along their length at the first rain.

The bronze originated as bronze metal clay which was kiln fired and then carefully hand finished. I recently found some green chrysoberyl beads in the soft, dry greens found in the desert and they paired perfectly with the bronze. These faceted gemstone beads have a chatoyance similar to moonstone and they glow and glimmer in the light. They alternate with tiny brass seed beads along the strand, with accents of picture jasper, rhyolite, vintage Orissa brass beads and charms, bone, cast bronze beads, and smaller, more gemmy chrysoberyl beads.

The necklace was strung on professional grade beading wire and secured with crimp beads, which are concealed beneath the brass wire wrap.

A perfect talisman for everyday wear, this is similar to the pieces in my own collection that I reach for time and again. Elegant and understated, it carries with it a true imprint of the desert wilderness.
