As I've visited Mesa Verde over the years I've been surprised to discover that the place which calls to me the most is not the spectacular cliff dwellings, but a complex of small ruins atop Chapin Mesa known as Far View.  The golden sandstone of the pueblos and kivas holds the sun in a beautiful way as they seem to rest on the bright edge of the world, the long-fingered mesas stretching away for miles in every direction.  There is a feeling of eternity to the place that sings to my soul.  When the sun is low in the afternoon there is a sense of warmth and well-being, as well as a sense of poignancy, in the air.

This talisman necklace tries to capture that feeling of serenity and warm earthiness, of something beautiful that is unseen yet felt in the heart.  Through color, texture, shape and material, I've composed this piece while resonating with the energy of Far View.  Nine talismans hang from an ancient excavated bronze ring which was found in eastern Europe.  From the left these are:

An ancient seal or walrus tooth from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, excavated and polished, on sterling silver,

A deer antler tip on leather, wrapped with bronze wire and brass beads,

A copper pendant molded from a Hovenweep sage twig, made by me, with wire links beaded with a rich variety of beads and crystals,

A chocolate baroque pearl, also on beaded wire links,

A rare two-faced rudraksha bead from India, helpful with relationships, on silver,

A bronze bird goddess, handmade by me, on brass beads with a red Arizona petrified wood nugget,

A fine silver PMC ring, impressed on stone in the Sonoran Desert, with juniper seed beads,

A fossil ammonite on seed beads and African brass,

A fine silver PMC disc by me, impressed with a fossil ammonite, on bronze.

The bead strand, which slips over your head, is simple, earthy and full of wonderful subtle color.  It is strung with Navajo Ghost Beads--juniper seeds that have been made into beads--and a variety of Picasso finish Czech glass seed beads.  Ghost Beads are worn to ward off evil spirits, and ancient juniper seed bead necklaces have been found in prehistoric sites across the Ancestral Pueblo Southwest.  At the juncture is a large bead of ancient Bactrian glass in a dark honey shade.

It's a wonderful, magical piece that captures the rough, gentle, nourishing warmth of peaceful afternoons in the company of the ancients.
