Meditating with this set of prayer beads is like spending a day in a warm, bright, sunlit place of stone and yucca, pale sand and aqua pools of water. This is the palette of colors and textures that I associate with the gentle healing and soothing energy of the desert at its most benign. Often a calm spring day spent drifting about on the dunes at White Sands embodies this feeling…but for those who can’t hop in the car and drive down there these beads are the next best thing.

When I set about making a set of these beads I often spend half the day just carefully selecting amulets and elements that harmonize with the quality of energy I’m trying to tune into. This set began with creamy aqua Peru opal and pale buff beads of bone, wood and saguaro cactus rib, with touches of pure silver, and expanded to include many gemstones and some rare ancient and antique beads.

Components:

Talismans: Peru opal tab pendant; naturally-shed deer antler; Utah variscite triangle by Gary Wilson; polymer clay flanged pod with Taos sage; fine silver PMC pendant, molded from Quebradas area fossil seabed rock, NM; antique New Guinea shell currency.

Africa; bone mala beads; saguaro cactus rib; antique shell, Africa; antique Idar-Oberstein faceted quartz; fossil brachiopod shell; Hatchita, NM turquoise nuggets; antler; etched agate; ancient quartz bicone, S. central Asia; serpentine; faceted prasiolite; onyx; “green sandalwood” mala bead; carved stone scarab (for regeneration), Egypt; fine silver PMC rustic tube; tulsi (holy basil) wood mala beads, grown in Amritapuri ashram, South India; olive wood subha (Muslim) prayer beads; amazonite; ancient agate, Africa; aquamarine crystal; rhyolite; aquamarine slab; fossil crinoid stem; olivewood rosary bead, Bethlehem; Peru opal; fossil ammonite; coyote bone; seed pod, S. America; Asian turquoise; ceramic; Pre-columbian shell, S. America; bone spacers. On the smaller strands there is also picture jasper, jade, prehnite, shell discs, and glass seed beads.

About Spirit Beads:

I have been making Spirit Beads for nearly 20 years now, and they remain one of my favorite things to do. These long hand-held strands are created for prayer, meditation, ceremony, and present-moment mindfulness practice. You're invited to enter into a living relationship with them, one which will become richer and deeper over time. They're made to give you something physical to touch and hold as a reminder of the presence of Spirit in daily life...everywhere, and in everything. As you slowly pass each bead and talisman through your hands, their colors and textures focus your attention in the here and now and quiet your mind. I tend to use mine for centering, to calm me and still my mind, and connect to places that are sacred to me.

What I love about Spirit Beads is that you are free to create your own way of using them, any way you choose: you can use them in an open-ended present moment practice, or you can assign meanings to each bead and talisman, or let them speak to you in a unique way each time you use them. You can also create your own prayers, mantras or rituals with your beads...the possibilities are endless!

This open-ended "shawl" style was originally created by contemporary prayer bead artisan Eleanor Wiley, who has traveled the world teaching others how to make and use their own prayer beads. Eleanor's work was a great inspiration to me in the early days of jewelry designing and continues to be so today.  I will include an information sheet with this set that will give you some suggestions as to how to use them.

These beads look lovely kept on your home altar, coffee table, nightstand, or even hung on the wall...any place where they will invite you to pick them up, and easily come to hand.  I have several sets of Spirit Beads and keep them on my mannequin or on the walls so I can always see them. They help bless and energize my workspace and home. They are large, but you can also wear them as a ceremonial piece!

SIZE: The strand measures 54 1/2" end to end.

CARE:  These beads are durable and made for daily handling. To clean and refresh your beads, I recommend wiping them down with a soft, damp cloth. They should not be immersed in water or you will damage the wooden beads.

PRESENTATION: These Spirit Beads will arrive beautifully gift wrapped in a large hand-stamped box. See the shop policies for details.
