:: Desert Dweller’s Mala :: Traditional 108 Bead Mala ::

Truly lovely…a strand of polished 8 mm round mother-of-pearl beads, each one cut to show a swirl of nacre and hand knotted onto tan silk cord. Desert dwellers prize materials that evoke life-giving water, which is so precious in the drylands, such as this exquisite shell…but its colors are like the soft desert landscape. About halfway up the strand are two ancient tube beads made of translucent white agate, bracketed in rondelles of pale peach Mexican fire opal. These agate beads were excavated in Africa and are many hundreds of years old, perhaps well over a thousand.

The large agate bicone-shaped guru bead is of a similar type and is also very old, displaying soft swirls of opaque white in a subtly translucent matrix. It was made from stone that was found in Africa, but it was probably sent to India where it was made into this bead, and then traded back to Africa…the tube beads may have the same history. Below it I have made a distressed tassel of silk ribbon that has been tie-dyed by hand, wrapped with cotton embroidery floss.

This is a beautiful mala to wear and also feels very rich to hold in your hand. The beads are a size that’s perfect for your mantra practice or meditation.

SIZE: The mala measures 23 3/4” from the back of your neck to the end of the ribbon tassel when worn. The mother-of-pearl bead strand is 36” long in total, while the guru bead and tassel are 6 1/2” long. The guru bead is 1 1/8” x 3/4”.

CARE:  Rinse in cool water to clean. Dry with a soft, damp cloth. To reshape the ribbon, squeeze and crush it together lengthwise in your hand, then hang to dry.

PRESENTATION: This mala will come to you beautifully giftwrapped in an earth-friendly and recycled gift box.  Please see the Shop Policies below for details.
