:: Golden Time ::
In early autumn the land in New Mexico is suffused with gold. The high desert is first carpeted with sunflowers stretching for miles. Later comes lush chamisa, as aspens turn brilliant yellow on the mountain slopes. The golden time finishes with huge cottonwoods in the river valleys finish up the parade of gold with their own spectacular glow. During this time of year I want to wear and work with the glowing shades of amber!
This necklace evolved into a unique style that I discovered can be worn three ways. Initially designed as a dramatic long opera-length piece with a small pendant, I added a second, smaller amulet on the back which serves as an accent and counterweight. When the strand is doubled, this amulet hangs with the larger one in front, either together with it as a doubled strand, or slightly separated, giving the piece the appearance of two distinct necklaces.
Most of the beads are a wide variety of Baltic amber, 35 to 50 million years old. Amber is often described as fossilized conifer resin, but it isn't technically a fossil. A fossil is something that has replaced the remains of a plant or animal. Amber is the original material itself, only it has become very hard over the millennia. It has a beautiful soft energy, calming, enveloping, warming and gently grounding. It's somewhat similar to turquoise in that way. It calms scattered energy. I find it makes a great antidote to anxiety. With the amber are beads of grossular garnet, baroque pearls, and sacred rudraksha mala beads from India. All are separated on the strand by antique French steel cut beads. The beads were strung on silk cord.
The bronze amulets were made from bronze metal clay that was impressed with sagebrush leaves and a pinon pine cone from Taos mesa in northern New Mexico.
