:: Death Valley Daze ::

This small bundle of treasures has such a good feeling to it. It’s compact and easy to wear, yet dense with interesting textures and objects…not to mention the desert connection. Death Valley rock became the thematic cornerstone of the piece, with two bronze discs bearing impressions from stones found on the ridge above Zabriskie Point (final photo). The stones there have the most intensely weathered surfaces, like they’re been out there for eons (which, I suppose, they have) and are slowly evaporating into space. A third disc of silver bears the impression of a 300 million year old fossil brachiopod I found in central New Mexico, back from when this desert was a primordial sea. These discs are made from metal clays and are individually formed by hand, fired in a kiln, and hand finished. Each one is unique.

Layered with these are two antique shell currency discs from Papua New Guinea, an ancient bone spindle whorl from Afghanistan, and a disc of fossil crinoid. Accenting the bundle on the strand above is an excavated glass bead from Africa. The cord is natural brown leather from India. The necklace can be shortened, if desired, simply by knotting it further up on the strand and cutting off the excess.

Wear this anywhere…it’s even tough enough to go on a hike with you.

For desert spirits and fearless souls…
